Gloomy forecast for Redcliffe Kite Festival 2011

    2011 - 05.09

Well it looks like the Redcliffe kite festival is happening once again this weekend. It’s a real pity this festival has failed to evolve over the years and looks to be just another bore fest.

I still don’t understand why anybody would schedule a kite festival at a time of the year there is a poor likelihood of wind.

With the same kites and fliers as every other year, the hideous music and intolerable babble from the monotone MC it’s no wonder we struggle to get the younger generations or any new blood into the sport of kite flying.

Here is a quote from the festival program-

“Only people with Kitefest accreditation badges

are permitted in the Restricted Flying Area.

Program subject to prevailing wind conditions”

In other words come to our festival and watch a couple of kites in the sky if we could be bothered. But no YOU can’t fly a kite because we have left no room with all of our market stalls and fenced off flying areas.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see a good festival put on for the people of Redcliffe and Brisbane. Festivals seem to be fewer and fewer here in Australia. Maybe it’s due to current trends in society but I suspect it has a lot more to do with festivals not adjusting to the times and failing to evolve into a decent form of entertainment for the onlookers.

Lets hope in the future that some festival organizers step up to the plate and provide a truly spectacular display in the near future.

A little background on the Redcliffe Kite Club President.

-The club president formed the club a few years ago after he was ousted as President of the Queensland Kite Society. (He was nominated but refused the nomination to save face)

-This very man who claims to love kites and kite flying is also the very person who had Kite Buggys banned from Pelican park by submitting falsified complaints toward the council about the buggy pilots actions.

    • Whilst still president he was under investigation by a number of QKS members for misappropriation of club funds and club kites
    • One weekend I personally witnessed David White accost a disabled member of the public who had inadvertantly entered the ring road around Pelican Park on his recumbant bike (I don’t think the cyclist could walk) Mr White first verbally abused the cyclist for bypassing the gate and then proceeded to lift the front of his bike and turn the man around without his approval.
    • Another weekend Mr White approached me at the park with a concealed knife and threatened to cut the lines of the kite I was flying.

I only ask this question. If you were approached by Mr White to sponsor his club or one of his events would you be confident with where your money was going??
